Can listening bring us to non-ordinary states of reality?
Open Tones is a contemporary improvisational ensemble dedicated to collaborative experimentation and the creation of new sound-based artistic forms. Through attentive listening and collective inquiry, the group develops performances that foreground process, presence, and the possibilities of spontaneous awareness. Open Tones formed at Reforesters Laboratory, where the group maintains an on-going residency. See the calendar for upcoming events.
Each session is an invitation to non-ordinary states of reality: guided meditation and breathwork, ceremonial cleansing herbs, and fully improvised music—wind instruments, voice, gongs, singing bowls, and percussion—moving participants through an experience of the present.
The journey
- Intention — Setting intention in a held, facilitated space.
- Breathwork & movement — Guided breath and movement from external noise toward internal presence.
- Meditation — Sensitizing the mind and body to subtle shifts.
- Sound — Immersive improvisation with wind, voice, gongs, bowls, and percussion.
- Return — Gentle integration and grounding.
